Get Moving: Fall Hiking and Walking Schedules

Hiking and walking are popular activities in the fall. Whether it's on a trail or on an indoor track, there are plenty of opportunities for people to get some exercise, socialize and enjoy nature’s beauty. Here are some outdoor and indoor events taking place in Pictou County.

Guided Hikes:
Friday, Oct. 18 – Hike the trails of LORDAPark. There are 2 inclines on the trail for which we will take our time. We have hiking poles to lend those who wish to use them. Since it is hunting season please wear blaze orange as protection. Must pre-register with the YMCA at 902-752-0202. Sponsored by the YMCA Pictou County.

Saturday, Oct. 19 – 5Km on Green Hill trail. Meet at Green Hill Provincial Park at 9:45 a.m. Lead by OCC Certified Leader. Be prepared by bringing water and snacks. Wear sturdy footwear and hiking poles recommended. Steep grades. It’s a free event but donations will be accepted. Pre-register with Elaine at elainefalcone5@gmail.com. Sponsored by Cape to Cape Trails Association.

Friday, Oct. 25 – 6.4 km hike (approx. 2.5 hours) on Greenhill Trail. Meeting time 10 a.m. at Green Hill Provincial Park. The hike will be half on the road and a half on a trail. Hiking boots are highly recommended. This hike is classified as moderate; however, there is one steep incline. Sponsored by the YMCA Pictou County.

Saturday, Oct. 26 – 6Km on the Fitzpatrick Mountain Trail and Campbell Hill Look Off. Meet at Deb’s Hidden Café in Scotsburn at Noon and will return between 3-4 p.m. Be prepared by bringing water and snacks. Moderate effort up and down hills on well-established hiking trials. Fall Trail Walking:
Now until Dec. 10 – Samson Trail every Tuesday. Meet at Goodman Rotary Park at 9 a.m. Free of Charge. If you are interested in trying Nordic Walking Poles, they are available to borrow free of charge from the New Glasgow Library. No registration is required.

Indoor Walking:
Hector Arena – Monday to Thursday: 8:30 -11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. and Fridays 830 a.m.-4 p.m. Schedule subject to change based on events at Arena.

Pictou County Wellness Centre – Indoor walking track around Bell Arena. All-day. Schedule subject to change based on events at the PCWC.

Sobeys Sports Complex –8:30 a.m. and Noon Monday to Friday around the complex. Flat surface.
