The Pictou County Rivers Association (PCRA) is again having its Ice Fishing Derby at Gairloch Lake, Pictou County on February 16, 2019 at 9 a.m., and if required a storm date of the next day February 17, 2019. It is the 12th continuous year for this event, which is held free of charge to all children up to ages 12. Adults and teens have an entry fee of $5 if they wish to take part in the derby.

All resources for this event are from donations, volunteer time and effort. It has been a big success in the past and with the weather cooperating we can have another great weekend on the ice. PCRA provides prizes and also free food and drinks during this family day. We are trying to improve this event for families to come out in our local community and enjoy the outdoors. The weekend of February 16th to 18th is the free-fishing weekend (Including Monday which is a provincial holiday) in Nova Scotia and Derby participants will not require a Nova Scotia fishing license to participate, but still respecting bag limits restrictions.

The Pictou County Rivers Association was formed in 1990 by a dedicated group of conservation minded anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. For the past 29 years, the membership-based organization has focused its efforts on conservation initiatives, protecting and restoring fish habitat, education and environmental stewardship.
